By the end of kindergarten students need to: FLUENTLY ADD AND SUBTRACT WITHIN 5.
By the end of first grade students need to: ADD AND SUBTRACT WITHIN 20, DEMONSTRATING FLUENCY FOR ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION WITHIN 10. Did you know that the Lockwood teachers all contribute to a Facebook page?!? It is called Lockwood 1st & 2nd Grade. We post many photos and news that will interest families and keep them updated on the happenings at Lockwood! As the FaceBook account is shared between all 10 classrooms and does not pertain to every single family, the news is more first grade instead of specifically for our room! I contribute to it occasionally but if want specific classroom news, please check out our classroom website, esler.weebly.com.
EBLI Island, EBLI Space, Sight Words Made Easy by EBLI are three great apps! Nora, the founder of EBLI suggests 20 minutes a day of practice. One app at a time starting with EBLI Island.
First graders will spend a majority of the year becoming more fluent with addition and subtraction strategies and facts. Using manipulatives such as two sided counters, little erasers, blocks, etc can really help students that are still working to solidify these skills. Please print a copy of the "Addition/Subtraction Helper" for a handy number-line, 120 chart, part/part/whole model, and tens frame.
